Examining the structures that protect and support your tear film
High resolution slit-lamp imaging provides a detailed view of the visible structures at the front of the eye. Eyelid assessment examines how the lids, lashes, gland openings, and blinking patterns contribute to tear film health.
At EnVision Dry Eye Center, Dr. Jason Besecker combines direct examination with imaging when useful. Photographs help document visible findings and can make it easier to explain what is affecting your eyes.
The eyelids spread tears with each blink, protect the ocular surface, and help release oil from the meibomian glands. Problems at the eyelid margins or incomplete blinking and closure can interfere with these functions.
The examination may assess lash debris, eyelid margin changes, gland openings, oil quality, blink completeness, and lid position. Findings may suggest conditions such as meibomian gland dysfunction, anterior blepharitis, Demodex blepharitis, or ocular rosacea.
You will rest your chin and forehead against the examination instrument while Dr. Besecker views your eyes under magnification. Light direction and magnification may change to inspect different structures, and images may be captured.
The eyelids may be gently moved to inspect the margins or inner surface. Gentle pressure may be applied to assess gland secretions when appropriate. You may also be asked to blink normally or close your eyes so lid function can be evaluated. Tell the team if light or pressure is uncomfortable.
Images can document redness, debris, lid margin features, and other visible changes. When follow up photographs are clinically useful, they can support comparisons and help explain a treatment plan.
A photograph does not measure every aspect of tear quality, diagnose all causes of pain, or show microscopic nerve function. Standard slit-lamp imaging is also different from meibography, which specifically images gland structure inside the eyelids.
The purpose is to connect visible and functional findings with the factors contributing to your symptoms. Eyelid disease, gland obstruction, incomplete blinking, and ocular surface changes may need different approaches.
Dr. Besecker considers these observations alongside symptoms, history, tear breakup time, osmolarity, and staining. Your plan may address several findings together, with follow up based on your response.
