Prescription treatment targeting tear evaporation
Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution) is an FDA-approved prescription eye drop for the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. It is a water free, preservative free formulation used to address excessive tear evaporation. At EnVision Dry Eye Center, it may be considered when examination findings suggest that an unstable tear film is contributing to your symptoms.
The tears must remain on the eye long enough to protect its surface between blinks. Meibomian glands in the eyelids supply oils that help limit evaporation. When these glands do not function well, tears can become unstable even when the eye can produce watery tears. Symptoms may include burning, grittiness, and fluctuating vision.

Perfluorohexyloctane spreads at the air–tear interface and forms a thin layer that is expected to reduce evaporation. The prescribing information notes that its exact mechanism in dry eye disease is not fully known. Its role differs from directly stimulating tear production or using a corticosteroid to treat inflammation.
Reducing evaporation does not mean damaged meibomian glands have regrown or every underlying problem has been corrected. Eyelid care or other treatment may still be appropriate.
Dr. Jason Besecker considers your symptoms, tear stability, meibomian gland findings, and ocular surface health together. Meibography and tear breakup time testing can help explain why tears are not staying stable. We also review your current drops and contact lens routine before recommending a plan.

The GOBI and MOJAVE trials enrolled patients with dry eye disease and clinical signs of meibomian gland dysfunction. Compared with saline control drops, perfluorohexyloctane produced greater improvements in eye dryness scores and corneal surface staining over the eight week treatment period. The pooled analysis supports benefits in both symptoms and an objective sign of surface damage.
Study averages do not predict an individual result. Follow up allows us to assess whether changes in comfort, vision, and surface findings justify continuing or adjusting treatment.
The labeled regimen is one drop in the affected eye or eyes four times daily. Follow the bottle’s specific instructions for drawing air into the bottle before dispensing a drop. Our team can review the technique with you.
Blurred vision and eye redness were reported in 1–3% of patients in pivotal studies. Do not use Miebo if you have had an allergic reaction to perfluorohexyloctane. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Safety and effectiveness below age 18 have not been established.
Contact the clinic for persistent irritation, pain, worsening redness, or vision changes. Review the complete prescribing information below for additional precautions.
Your plan may combine medication with care directed at the eyelids and glands. Bring your home care routine and all eye drops to your evaluation so we can build a practical schedule. We will identify the purpose of each treatment and discuss how its effect will be assessed.
